4to. 12 volumes in 13. 161 tinted lithograph plates (one of which is folding), 374 plain lithograph plates, 38 hand-colored lithograph plates, 35 folding lithograph maps and plans, some with hand-coloring, 11 folding geological sections with hand-coloring, 8 lithograph diagrams, 8 full-page lithograph maps, some with hand-coloring, 1 folding botanical profile, 1 lithograph table, 2 folding hand-colored geological plans, 13 steel-engraved views, 5 of which are folding, wood engravings in the text. Original brown cloth stamped in blind, rebacked preserving original gilt-stamped spines. One volume House issue, but with Senate issue spine, occasional dampstain in a few volumes, some plates toned, repaired tears to a few folding plates, generally an excellent set.

FIRST QUARTO EDITION, ALL BUT ONE VOLUME SENATE ISSUE. An important compilation of the government's exploration and survey of four separate possible routes for a transcontinental railroad. The Quarto edition was begun before the first octavo edition was completed, but contains considerably more information than that three-volume work. Howes P3; Wagner-Camp 262-7.
