[4], xxiv, 52, vii, 53-128; [4], 106-157, [8], 158-248; [7], 108; [11], xxxv, 109-220; [7], vii, 221-347 pp. Hand-colored engraved frontispiece, 2 engraved portraits, 362 hand-colored plates (including 318 birds), and vignette title vol 1. Period blue full morocco, gilt spine panels, elaborate gilt tooled borders and dentelles, morocco spine labels, all edges gilt. Offsetting from frontis to vignette title, faint offsetting from plates and some minor spotting throughout, edges of binding worn, spines and joints rubbed, hinges discreetly repaired. Provenance: Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester (bookplates).

FIRST EDITION, THE DUKE OF GLOUCESTER'S COPY. "One of the most important of all bird books, both as a Fine Bird Book and a work of Ornithology" (Sitwell). Though issued under different titles, the two works are considered one, with the plates of Gleaning of Natural History numbered continuously with the earlier volumes.
