FIRST EDITION, A PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED "TO JOSEPH C. DELANO ESQ/ from his sincere friend/ and well wisher/ John J. Audubon/ New York Nov 1st 1840," upside down on the final leaf. In describing the Red Phalarope in volume 5 of The Birds of America, Audubon relates that one of the only occasions he ever saw the bird alive was on board a packet ship commanded by his "good friend" Captain Delano (p 229).
