8vo (217 x 127 mm). xii, 359, [1]. Half-title. Original cloth with paper spine label, rebacked with original spine laid down. Custom clamshell case. Cloth unevenly sunned, 1 1/2" spot of soiling front board, smaller spot to lower corner of rear board, some chipping to spine and label.
Provenance: H. Bradley Martin (bookplate); his sale, Sotheby's, June 6, 1989, lot 33.
FIRST EDITION, A PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED "TO JOSEPH C. DELANO ESQ/ from his sincere friend/ and well wisher/ John J. Audubon/ New York Nov 1st 1840," upside down on the final leaf. In describing the Red Phalarope in volume 5 of The Birds of America, Audubon relates that one of the only occasions he ever saw the bird alive was on board a packet ship commanded by his "good friend" Captain Delano (p 229).
