4to (195 x 153 mm). Engraved additional title, dedication vignette and 150 emblems by J. Gole. Modern quarter vellum. Additional title very browned and laid down, light soiling to letterpress title, small hole with loss of a couple letters on N2, covers slightly bowed.
Provenance: John Landwehr (bookplate; his sale, Bloomsbury, November 15, 2006, lot 91).

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. "Jan van Hoogstraten worked as a bookseller and tax collector in Dordecht, Gouda and Rotterdam, amongst other locations. He admired his fellow poets Jan Vos, Joan de Haes, Pieter Langendijk and the earlier Vondel and was greatly influenced by the early seventeenth century emblem books of the Jesuits. He wrote several comedies and pastoral and occasional poetry" (Landwehr sale). Landwehr Low Countries 334; Praz p 373.
