Renée Rankin (née Baker), wife to Sir Robert Rankin, Conservative M.P., was a talented amateur watercolourist and alongside her husband a keen supporter of the arts, sitting for Sir Alfred Munnings and most probably receiving guidance from Flint in her watercolour paintings. The family lived near Liverpool, where in 1914 their daughter Cécile Elizabeth Florence Rankin was born. She was later painted by Philip Alexius de Laszlo (see lot 26).

Located in Northern Italy, Laigueglia is a small town in the province of Savona.
