Abstract signed and dated 'Terry Frost 56' (lower right) gouache 78 x 57 cm. (30 3/4 x 22 1/2 in.)
PROVENANCE: Gifted by the artist to the poet Thomas Blackburn, father of the present owner Thence by descent
EXHIBITED: London, The New Art Centre
Thomas Blackburn was born in Hensingham, Cumberland and studied English at Durham University. Following his graduation, Blackburn moved to London where he was involved with the Soho literature circuit before holding a Gregory Fellowship in poetry at the University of Leeds from 1956 to 1958. Frost was himself a Gregory Fellow in Leeds at this time and adapting his style following his move from Cornwall (see following lot). The present work displays the strong colours of the period and the bold hexagon, which Patrick Heron commented gave these pictures an originality and freshness of their own, remains the central point of focus.
