Merlyn Evans was born in Cardiff and is known for his surrealist and abstract works, which can often incorporate an overtone of menace. Having studied under Stanley William Hayter in the early 1930s, Evans went on to exhibit at the 1936 International Surrealist Exhibition in London before spending a period of time in South Africa. The present work was painted the same year that Evans joined the Royal College of Art (1965) and demonstrates the artist's unique take on abstraction, rarely available at auction.
