PROVENANCE: With Crane Kalman Gallery, London, 1962 Private Collection, U.K.
EXHIBITED: London, Crane Kalman Gallery, A Selection of Paintings by Alan Lowndes, 13 December 1961 - 13 January 1962, no.44
Painted three years after his first exhibition at The Crane Kalman Gallery, Manchester, the present work displays the early interest that Lowndes took in everyday scenes of public life, and the popular pursuits of the working man. Well known both in his lifetime and since his death in 1978 as a result of prolonged ill heath, Lowndes was a keen drinker, and spent many an hour in deep conversation with fellow artists at The Tinners Arms and The Sloop Inn in St. Ives.
