PROVENANCE: With Park Square Gallery, Leeds, where purchased by Mr David Blackburn, September 1975
EXHIBITED: Leeds, Park Square Gallery, Prunella Clough: Paintings & Drawings (35 works), 9 September - 4 October 1975
Best known for his abstract landscape paintings, Blackburn was not only a talented artist in his own right, but also a keen collector and supporter of fellow artists and students. Amongst the expansive collection amassed throughout his career are works by artists including Samuel Palmer, Graham Sutherland and Gerhart Frankl. With a particular attraction towards landscape painting it is no wonder that Blackburn was drawn to the industrial and urban subject matters which came to epitomise much of Clough's work during this period, here displayed in the criss-crossed motif reminiscent of factory gates or railings, with the indication of a rusting industrial landscape beyond.
