Footnotes

  • PROVENANCE:
With Crane Kalman Gallery, London, where purchased by the present owner circa 1972

Living in St. Ives gave Lowndes the opportunity to take full advantage of the rich colours that abounded in the coastal lifestyle, here displayed in the vivid blue of the hull of the boat and the yellow coats worn by the sailors on board. Lowndes captured the exuberance of the local community in their leisure pursuits, most famously in Beach Scene (October, 1964, Private Collection) that incorporated the same attention to character and detail that was to remain a constant theme throughout his working life.
