Footnotes

  • St. Alexei Metropolitan of Moscow is the patron Saint of His Holiness Patriarch Alexei II of Moscow and All Russia. St Alexei (1295-1378) took monastic vows at the Epiphany Monastery of Moscow c. 1313, when he was given the name Alexius. In 1340, he was appointed the Metropolitan's deputy in Vladimir, twelve years later consecrated as Bishop of Vladimir and in 1353 became Metropolitan of Moscow and all Russia. Famously, he miraculously healed the wife of Jani Beg, Khan of the Golden Horde, when in 1357, in answer to his prayers she was cured of blindness. This act of kindness strengthened his ties with the Tatars and prevented their raids on Moscow. In the 1360s, Alexius founded the Andronikov, Chudov and Alekseyevsky monasteries. Seventy years after his death in 1378, Alexius was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church and ever since has been venerated as one of the patron Saints of Moscow.
