    In his monograph on Gysis published in Germany in 1902, a year after the artist's death, Marcel Montandon noted: "One would say that Centaurs, an oil study of unrivalled strength, which symbolises the virulent, menacing torrents, painted the same time as his ceiling mural Triumph of Bavaria [1895-1899], draws from the same pool of inexhaustible intellectual inspiration and imagination."
