Footnotes

  • Provenance:
German private collection, acquired before 1975.

    Literature:
Such large marble tables of 'sigma' shape were used as dining tables in antiquity and a similar example can be found in the Palace of Diocletian in Split, Croatia.

However in the Christian Period they appear to have also been used for liturgical purposes such as baptismal fonts and altar tables. For discussion of this type and their re-use in Islamic contexts, cf. F.B. Flood, 'The Medieval Trophy as an Art Historical Trope: Coptic and Byzantine 'Altars' in Islamic Contexts', Muqarnas: An Annual on the Visual Culture of the Islamic World, XVIII, 2001, pp.41-72.
