Footnotes

  • The inscription reads: "Owner 'Abdalah"(sic).

The shape of this unusually heavy basin is paralled by an example in the V&A which is inlaid and which is attributed to Fars circa 1588 by Melikian-Chirvani (Melikian-Chirvani, Islamic Metalwork from the Iranian World. 8-18th Centuries, London, 1982, p. 302, no. 132; Inv. no. 768-1894). It is derived from a standard model of basin in general use in Persia from the mid 13th to the mid 14th Century and which was in continuous use throughout the 16th Century.

The rather unusual and extensive imagery on the interior walls may possibly be related to scenes from manuscript illustration, particularly to the Shahnameh.
