A pair of gold disc earrings (pokhani) Gujarat, 18th Century
formed of two discs attached to a straight cylinder, profusely decorated with a concentric series of small flat circular elements on a ground of filigree 5.2cm diam.(2)
Reel-type pokhani are typically worn by members of the Bharvad community. It is common to change the type of pokhari according to age and size of the hole in the lobe. The variability of types is vast and patterns change from one district to another. The basic form is moulded from thin gold sheet and filled with wax and the decoration is soldered on (see Ganguly, W. Earrings. Ornamental identity and beauty in India, Delhi, 2007, pp. 86-87).
