A 'Tree of Life' embroidered textile formerly in the collection of Prince Victor Duleep Singh
India, 19th Century

220 x 137 cm.

Footnotes

  • Provenance:
Prince Victor Duleep Singh (1866-1918); his wife Lady Anne Blanche Coventry (1874-1956; married 1898); and thence by descent to the current owner, her great-nephew.

The 'tree of life' design is reminiscent of chintz textiles produced in India for European markets in the 17th and 18th Centuries. Its most unusual aspect lies in the use of silk as the ground fabric instead of the normal cotton or mashru. For a discussion on similar use of silk embroidery on silk ground, see Veronica Murphy et al, Origins of the Mughal Flowering, Cat.17 (not illustrated).
