A large Ottoman engraved copper Tray (tepsi)
Turkey, 17th Century
decorated to interior with a five-pointed star within a further star with surrounding band of rope motif, a series of twelve cartouches containing floral and split-palmette design on a hatched ground terminating in tri-lobed element either end, the rim with panels one containing an inscription cartouche with the owner's name, with traces of tinning
73cm. diam.


  • The inscriptions read: "Its owner, Mahmud bin Khalil"; and a later owner's mark as "Its owner, 'Abdallah ibn Ashman".

    A ewer with cartouches and decorative elements very similar to those on this tray is in the Sadberk Hanim Museum, Istanbul (M.971-9111) dated to the 16th century (F. Bodur, The Art Of Turkish Metalworking, Istabul, 1987, no. A.52). A tray in a private German Collection also bears the same floral motifs and engraved rim (Oriental Splendour. Islamic Art from German Private Collections, Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, 1993, no. 122).
