of rounded form with a flat rim, decorated in repoussé, the well with a a raised central roundel containing foliate interlace surrounded by an undulating line, the rim with a scrolling foliate vine, the base with engraved inscription

    The inscription reads: adile sultan hazretlerine 1241, "For Her Excellence Adile Sultan [AH] 1241[/AD 1825]"

    Adile Sultan (1825-1898) was the name of one of the daughters of Sultan Mahmud II, for whom the Adile Sultan Palace was built in 1861, and sister of the Sultans Abdulmecid I and Abdulaziz. She was an Ottoman princess, a renowned female Diwan poet and a philanthropist. A jewelled dagger belonging to her was sold previously in these rooms, Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Works of Art, 4 October 2011, lot 172.
