rectangular, the red silk ground embroidered in gold silk with three zig-zag bands containing inscriptions, above and below inscription-filled palmette medallions flanked by inscription-filled roundels, mounted on stretcher
46.7 x 67.2 cm.

  • The inscriptions read:

    In the large band, a repetition of the shahadah.
    In the narrow band above, a repetition of Qur'an, sura II, al-Baqarah, verse 144.
    In the narrow band below, repetition of a prayer: subhan allah wa bi-hamdihi subhan allah al-'azim, 'Praise be to God and in praise of Him. Praise be to God most Great'.
    In the roundels and cartouches, repetition of invocations to God: ya subhan/ya sultan/ya hannan/ya mannan, 'Oh Exalted! Oh Sultan! Oh Most Compassionate! Oh Propitious!'
