Footnotes

  • The author of manuscript (A), Ridwan Efendi ibn 'Abdullah Abhari al-Jani al-Falaki al-Razzaz al-Misri al-Munajjim (d. 1711), was an Ottoman astronomer and astrologer who worked in Egypt. The preface mentions Sultan Mustafa II (reg. 1695-1703) and the date AH 1109/AD 1697-98, which is probably the year in which the work was composed and dedicated to the Sultan.

The author of manuscript (B), Abu 'Abdullah (Zayd) Muhammad ibn Sa'id ibn Ya'qub ibn Ahmad al-Susi al-Marghithi (1598-1678), was from Sus and was the imam of a mosque in Marrakesh. (See Brockelmann, Geschichte der arabischen Litteratur, II, 615). This manuscript was copied in 1711, only thirty-three years after the death of the author, thus making it an early copy of the work.
