Ottoman Turkey, dated Sha'ban 1090/September 1679
Arabic manuscript on gold-sprinkled paper, 244 leaves, 15 lines to the page written in clear and neat naskhi script in black ink with diacritics and vowel points in red and black, gold discs between verses, inner margins ruled in gold, occasional illuminated devices in outer borders, the words ashr and hizb written in thuluth script in red, sura headings written in white on gold rectangular panels, catchwords, one fine illuminated frontispiece in colours and gold, edges frayed, some crude repairs, final prayers and colophon written on the last three pages of the manuscript, later reddish-brown leather binding, with flap, worn, with slipcase

  • The scribe states in the colophon that he has copied fifty-six Qur'ans to date, and that the present manuscript is his fifty-seventh.
