Footnotes

  • Provenance: Property of a Gentleman; acquired Christie's, Islamic Art, Indian Miniatures, Rugs and Carpets, 15th October 1996, Lot 246; formerly Brocklebank Collection.

According to the catalogue of the above sale, when initially examined the dish had an old label bearing the name of the Brocklebank Collection. It was possibly offered at Christie's in the sale of Rhodian Faience, Majolica,..., the Property of Ralph Brocklebank Esq., July 5th, 1922, lot 44B (third dish).

The design of the well of the present dish bears strong similarities to one in the David Collection, Copenhagen (von Folsach, Kjeld, Art from the World of Islam in the David Collection, Copenhagen, 2001, p. 187, 27/1978) and one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Atasoy, Nurhan and Julian Raby, Iznik - the Pottery of Ottoman Turkey, London, 1989, fig. 468, p. 243).

The same coloured slip ground present on the underside of the foot is found covering a dish in the Al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait (Atasoy and Raby, op. cit., pl. 671, pp. 290-1).
