A Victorian oak bedroom suite
by Gillows in the manner of A.W.N Pugin
Comprising a wardrobe, the castellated cornice above a pair of linenfold panelled doors enclosing hanging space, below is an arrangement of four short drawers, the sides with chamfered stiles headed by monogram roundels bearing the letter 'F', on stile feet with carved leaf and berry angle brackets, the locks stamped 'HOBBS & CO. LONDON/ LEVER/ MACHINE MADE', 122cm wide, 60cm deep, 209cm high, (48" wide, 23.5" deep, 82" high); a side table with a single frieze drawer above octagonal turned legs, on a pair of platform bases with carved rosettes, joined by a pole stretcher, 91cm wide, 51cm deep, 76cm high, (35" wide, 20" deep, 29.5" high), a matching washtand with a galleried grey marble top above a frieze drawer, partially stamped 'GILLOWS LANCASTER', 91cm wide, 51cm deep, 90cm high, (35" wide, 20 deep, 35" high), a chest of three short and five long graduated drawers flanked by chamfered stiles headed by the monogram 'F', on conforming carved bracket feet, 117cm wide, 56cm deep, 130cm high, (46" wide, 22" deep, 51" high), and an associated 19th century Gothic style oak dressing table mirror with carved paterae decoration and ring-turned supports, 51cm wide, 61cm high, (20" wide, 24" high).

  • Two triple wardrobes presumably from this suite and similarly bearing the carved intial 'F' to the uprights have appeared seperately at auction at Christie's, London 9 July 1998, lot 138 and 14 September 2006, lot 308. A further example is illustrated in R.Cooke, Palace of Westminster, 1987, p.324.

    The triple wardrobes are of a pattern designed by A.W.N Pugin (1812-1852) for Charles Barry's (1795-1860) New Palace of Westminster and which bear the cypher of Queen Victoria. The Palace of Westminster cupboards which were supplied by Gillows and appear in the firms Estimate Sketch Books for 1852 (3828). The metal work was supplied by the Pugin collaborators Hardman and Iliffe of Birmingham.
