Bonhams 1793 : A William IV rosewood carved side cabinet attributed to Gillows

The rectangular top with rectangular leaf carved superstructure above two frieze drawers and a pair of panelled doors enclosing a divided interior with four shelves, flanked by lotus leaf carved and moulded uprights on a plinth base, with castors, door panels probably of later date, with paper label to the reverse of the right drawer, 'Sir Ths Gage' and another, 'Lot...', 143cm wide, 73cm deep, 109cm high (56" wide, 28.5" deep, 42.5" high).

Provenance: almost certainly supplied to the antiquarian and entomologist, Sir Thomas Gage, 7th Bt. (1781-1820), for Hengrave Hall, Suffolk.
Purchased by the vendor's father in the contents sale, Messrs Knight, Frank & Rutley, 15th-18th & 22nd-25th September 1952.

The Gage family were known to have patronised Gillows (see L.Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs, 1760-1800, p.24). There is a Gillows sketch in the archives for 'A mahogany Medal Box' dated 1796 commissioned for 'Sir Thomas Gage's Son', who became the above mentioned 7th Baronet.
