Lot Details
A rare small Queen Anne walnut crossbanded and featherbanded chest
The rectangular moulded top above two short and two long graduated drawers, with one small drawer to each side, on a moulded plinth and later bun feet, 68cm wide, 45cm deep, 85cm high (26.5" wide, 17.5" deep, 33" high).

Footnotes

  • The feature of the side drawers in the above lot is unusual, facilitating the use of the chest for writing, whilst being able to use the side drawers for ink pots and quills. Another early walnut chest with such a feature can be found in Fairfax House, York as part of the Noel Terry Collection, which was previously at Mallett in 1951 and with J. McDowell, Esq, sold Sotheby's 6 March 1936, lot 143. (See The Noel Terry Collection of Furniture & Clocks, York Civic Trust, p.70).

See also A.Bowett, Early Georgian Furniture, 1715-1740, fig 3:15 & 3:14, who illustrates another example with one drawer, Bowett suggests this type of chest could also have functioned as a dressing table. His example formed part of the John Parry Collection (see Christies, London, Three Woods: A Passion for Walnut, Oak & Yew, The John Parry Collection, sold 25 March 2010, lot 38), (£82,250 inc premium) and was formerly with Ronald A. Lee.
