Footnotes

  • Amundsen learned his ability to negotiate polar ice through seal hunting expeditions out of Tønsberg. He went on to join the Tønsberg Seamen's Association in February 1894 and was given a place, as Seaman, on the sailing vessel Magdalena, of London. Following his successful navigation of the Northwest Passage in Gjøa, finishing in 1906, Amundsen went back to Tønsberg in 1907 as part of his lecture tour. It was then that the Seamen's Association took the opportunity to venerate him for his achievements. The Association later organised the erection of an Amundsen statue in the town in his honour; it was unveiled in 1933.

Provenance: Roald Amundsen, and by descent.
