Footnotes

  • Borchgrevink, a Norwegian resident in Australia, led the first British Antarctic Expedition aboard the Southern Cross. Privately financed, primarily by the publisher George Newnes, the expedition achieved a number of "firsts", including: being the earliest party to winter in Antarctica; exploring the Ross Ice Shelf by sledge (reaching a farthest south of 78·83º, 23 February 1900, during which the emperor penguin rookery at Cape Crozier was discovered); and using dogs for transport on the continent.
