Footnotes

  • Murdoch (1862-1939) was an explorer and accomplished artist. He was the official expedition artist on the Dundee Antarctic Whaling Expedition of 1892-93 led by Captain Alexander Fairweather and William Speirs Bruce. The pioneering expedition, to the Weddell Sea, Falkland and South Sandwich Islands, on the whalers Balaena, Active, Diana and Pole Star (three of which are presumed to feature in this image), was considered to mark the commencement of the "Heroic Age" of Antarctic exploration. See following 2 lots for Murdoch's account of the expedition From Edinburgh to the Antarctic, 1894.
