Footnotes

  • A good record of Zanzibar, several images showing the damage to the Sultan's palaces during the Anglo-Zanzibar War of 1896, purportedly the shortest war in history (38 minutes). There is also an image of the wreck of the Sultan's royal yacht HHS Glasgow which was sunk at the same time. The war was occasioned by the accession of a new sultan who was not the approved British candidate. The defeated sultan took refuge in the German consulate, with which this album is likely to have had connections.
