Footnotes

  • Anthony Fiala (1869-1950), was appointed photographer to the Ziegler-financed expedition of 1901-1902 to Franz Josef Land, led by Evelyn Briggs Baldwin with the object of establishing a depot on one of the islands, from where attempts at the North Pole could be made. In addition to many photographs, Fiala is credited with making the first film within the Arctic during this expedition. Baldwin failed to achieve his objective and being over-anxious regarding fuel, aborted the expedition. A disappointed Ziegler decided to send out a second expedition (with National Geographic Society support), led this time by Fiala, but the expedition's ship America, a Dundee-built whaler, was crushed and lost. Several unsuccessful attempts were made to reach the North Pole, the support ship Frithjof was damaged, and in the end the expedition was rescued by the Terra Nova.
