Two photographs, each with portraits of all of the crew members of the Discovery and the Alert identified by surname, albumen prints, mounted, four of the Alert's crew members are number 1 to 4 and are described thus in manuscript on the mount: "1,2,3 and 4 are teetotallers. The first three were at the meeting on 24/5/75", each image approximately 210 x 160mm., 1875 (2)

  • A SCARCE EARLY PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD of all of the officers, crew and respective Captains, Sir George Strong Nares of the Alert, and Henry Stephenson of the Discovery. The four "teetotallers" of the Alert that have been singled out on the mount comprise: 1). A Ayles 2). W. Malley 3). Norris and 4). G. Burrows. The date of the meeting mentioned, 24th of May 1875, was just five days before the ships set sail for their ill-fated expedition to the North Pole from Portsmouth on May 29th 1875.
