Footnotes

  • The majority of images show either the tamil workers (identified as klings, a term now considered highly derogatory) or managers (both Malay and British) at the Alma and Tang Bang estates. The Tamil immigrants were considered better workers than native Malays, and formed the mass of the workforce on estates. The Alma Estate, seven miles from Prye, comprised 500 acres set up by a Mr Wilson during the mid 1850s. It was later extended to 3000 acres with 800 acres under tapioca, 60,000 rubber trees, and 30,000 coconut.
