Footnotes

  • A number of images can be attributed to Suzuki (1855-1912) who was one of the first Japanese photographers to study abroad under the tutelage of English artist, Charles Wirgman. He completed his photographic apprenticeship under Shimooka Renjo and, in 1876, opened his first studio in Nagoya. He went bankrupt in 1896 after speculating in the shipping industry.

Images include: The bronze tomb of Tokugawa Ieyasu, Nikko (numbered 58 in the negative); a number of architectural views in Nikko, including the Yomeimon Gate; a young girl posing with a bonsai tree; a group portrait of young women, one playing the shamisen; two women playing the koto and shamisen; a young woman being carried in a sedan chair; two young women in a rickshaw; children in Yokohama with a street vendor; a view of a grocer; a man with horse "Plowing Field," numbered 1018 in the negative; a view of rice harvesting, and a women with an umbrella.
