Footnotes

  • In addition to the excellent Chinese views, the album contains an important group of six of the images by Beato which document the actions of the US squadron sent to obtain justice or exact retribution for Korean action against an American merchantman in 1866. It seems that Beato was a last-minute addition, joining when the squadron called at Nagasaki.
