A very good album comprising approximately 132 views (and a small number of portraits) of Hong Kong (several attributable to William Floyd), and various Treaty Ports, six rare images by Felice Beato of the US military in Korea (1871), as well as Singapore, Sumatra and a good series for Calcutta, albumen prints including a number of panoramas, well-captioned in ink on the mounts, images 225 x 385mm. and smaller, half morocco (earlier leaves working loose), folio (560 x 400mm.), [c.1868-1871]


  • In addition to the excellent Chinese views, the album contains an important group of six of the images by Beato which document the actions of the US squadron sent to obtain justice or exact retribution for Korean action against an American merchantman in 1866. It seems that Beato was a last-minute addition, joining when the squadron called at Nagasaki.

    This album was consigned with a remarkable silver-gilt trophy, the Challenge Cup presented to a Mr. Wilson as the owner of winners at both the Spring and Autumn Cheefoo Race meetings for 1864, prompting the suggestion that he was also the compiler of this collection. The album contains external and internal views of the house owned by Messrs. Wilson Cornabé & Co. of Chefoo. The Challenge Cup is in the Fine Silver sale at New Bond Street, 21 November 2012, Lot 107.
