The Swedish expedition to Spitsbergen led by Otto Torell, "often regarded as the first interdisciplinary polar expedition carried out by competent scientists, was exceptionally successful and for the first time provided reliable charts of the northern coasts of the archipelago" (Howgego). Chydenius was the physicist on the expedition.
