Footnotes

  • The Second Grinnell Expedition 1853-1855, deployed in an attempt to locate the lost Sir John Franklin Expedition, was organised and headed by Dr. Elisha Kent Kane. Kane charted the coasts of Smith Sound and the Kane Basin during his search and penetrated further north than any other explorer at that time. After two icebound winters, Kane was forced to abandon the Advance, and march, with a number of crew members, for 83 days, to Upernavik, where they were rescued.
