  • William Borthwick served in the Madras Presidency, transferring to Malwa in 1828, where - as recorded on the verso of the portrait by a descendent - he "brought the Thugs to justice". The narrative of Borthwick's capture, with the help of a small number of Sepoys, of a gang of Thugs is told in Mike Dash, Thug: The True Story of India's Murderous Cult, 2005.
