Footnotes

  • The 1891 Black Mountain (modern Torghar District), or Hazara Expedition was the fourth occasion that British forces had engaged the Yusufzai clans, most particularly Hashim Ali, the Khan of the Isazai (who merited a field force named for them in the following year). This military demonstration lasted from 1st March to 29th May, involved over 7000 British troops. and was typical of an almost continous series of small expeditions into tribal areas. This one involved clashes with the Hindoustani 'Fanatics' under Maulvi Abdulla. The force coverged from three directions, and from the images here it is clear that John Burke was attached to the Indus River column.

The owner of this album, Captain Noble (1870-1901) spent a number of years on active service in N.W.F.P, and was almost certainly on this expedition. He was later a transport officier on the Tirah Campaign (1897-98).

The order of the images is as follows: Colonel Mahomed Aslaim Khan and Officers Khyber Rifles (Burke 3, titled in the image); Towara. [2nd Batt.] Seaforth Highlanders crossing the Indus at early dawn (Burke 7); View up the Indus from Towara, showing Kotkai (Burke 10); Village of Ghanzi Kot, rushed by Ghanzis 19th March 1891; with "E" Company, 4th Sikhs, who repulsed the attack (Burke 16); Village of Kimhar, from bivouac at Bela Paizadah (Burke 19, titled in the image); Baio, from Diliari heights, 5352 feet (Burke 28); No.1 Mountain Battery, R.A. shelling Diliari from Palosi (Burke); Artillery end of camp Palosi (Burke, titled in the image); Indus Valley from Diliari heights...Guides in foreground (Burke 29); Palosi. View of the Camp from the River (Burke); Baggage on the "road" (the "Corkscrew" road) (Burke, number indistinct); Machai Peaks, from Abu (Burke 70); A picturesque bit of Machai Spurs, looking towards Kaim Gully (Burke 116); A typicl group of 4th Sikhs (Burke 140); Oghi Burke 166); Valley of the Indus, from Makranai (Burke); Abbottabad; Peshawar Fort; Attock (2); Rawalpindi (3, of which 2 signed in the negative by J. Winter); Darwaya Kas. On the Murree-Abbottabad road (J. Winter); The Corporals. 1st Bn. Bedfordshire Regt. 1892 (J.Winter); E Company 1st Bedfordshire Regt. 1893.
