Footnotes

  • Wilkins had served in 1921-1922 as an ornithologist aboard the Quest on the Shackleton-Rowett Expedition to the Southern Ocean and adjacent islands. This portrait was taken the year before his ill-fated Nautilus expedition to the North Pole in the summer of 1931. Although the expedition was unsuccessful, he was able to prove that submarines were capable of operating beneath the polar ice cap, thereby paving the way for future successful missions.
