Footnotes

  • Phyllis Pierce, to whom the letter is addressed, worked as a Secretary to Shackleton prior to James Cook. Miss Pierce and Shackleton enjoyed a good working relationship and his respect for her was acknowledged with the gift of this signed photograph. It was signed on the day that the Quest left St. Katherine's Dock for the South Atlantic and was later used in Hugh Robert Mills' book The Life of Ernest Shackleton (1923).
