Tapering form with applied girdle, the lower body applied with stylised strap-work and flutes, leaf-capped beaded scroll handles, on a spreading circular base, the stepped-dome cover with bud finial, engraved with a coat of arms, with associating letter, height of cup 19.5cm, weight total 55.5oz.

Footnotes

  • By repute the cup once belonged to the Kings of Ashanti, the last of whom was deposed in 1906. It is presumed the cup was looted by the natives from a pirate or trading vessel and sent as a present to the King by one of the coast chiefs.
