DUTCHESS OF SUTHERLAND CRIPPLES GUILD: A silver two-handled pedestal bowl
incuse mark D.S.C.G crowned, Birmingham 1909, also with sponsor's mark M S pellet between in conjoined circles, possibly for Millicent Sutherland
Of plain form with deep flared bowl, the outswept elongated handles applied with flat shaped caps, on a knopped pedestal foot, length handle to handle 37.7cm, diameter of bowl 26cm, weight 26oz.

  • Founded in 1898 as The Potteries and Newcastle Cripples Guild, by Millicent Sutherland, 4th Duchess of Sutherland, a society beauty and social reformer.
    In 1907 renamed The Duchess of Sutherland Cripples' Guild of Handicraft. They started producing art metalworks from 1902 under Francis Arthur Edwards employing twelve boys and later a number of adults. Silver works were being sold at their showrooms in New Bond Street, London.
    The Guild closed in 1922.
