Frederick Buck (Irish, 1771-circa 1840)
A pair of portrait miniatures of Lieutenant Robert Dowman Battelle (b.1788) of the 62nd (Derbyshire) Regiment of Foot and Mrs Sarah Battelle (b.1788); the former, wearing red coat with silver epaulette, white regimental cross-belt and badge, white chemise, black stock and cravat; the latter, wearing white dress edged with embroidery, white sash tied with a ribbon bow, her blonde hair parted, upswept and dressed in ringlets framing her face.
The latter, signed and dated verso Mrs Battelle Aged 26/ taken in the City of Cork/ Fredk Buck. Esq. July 1814, gilt-mounted on rectangular papier-mâché frames; the former, inscribed to the reverse Lieutenant R. D. Battelle/ Aged 26/ 62nd Derbyshire Regiment/ of Militia/ Taken in the city of Cork/ by Mr Buck/ July 1814, and in a later hand For my daughter/ Mary Battelle Clapp/ and my daughter/ Mattie Gibbs; the latter, inscribed to the reverse Mrs Battelle/ Aged 26/ Taken in the city of Cork/ by Frederick Buck/ July 1814/ For my daughter/ Mary Battelle Clapp/ and my daughter/ Mattie Gibbs.
