Inscribed to the reverse My/ Beloved My/ Adored Stephen/ My Idolised and/ Matchless Husband/ Married June 11th/ 1808/ Louisa Peacocke, gold fausse-montre frame, the reverse with border of blue glass surrounding gold-mounted aperture, glazed to reveal plaited hair.

Footnotes

Stephen was the fifth son of first cousins Marmaduke and Mary Peacocke and is listed in the 1894 edition of 'Burkes Landed Gentry' under the entry for 'Peacocke of Efford Park, Southampton'. Stephen married Louisa (1787-1871), daughter and joint-heir of Ponsonby Tottenham, MP, in St James's Church, Bath in 1808. The union saw the birth of at least one son, Stephen Ponsonby, who followed his father into the British Army, assuming the rank of Captain. Stephen is known for his paintings and lithographs of Southern Indian landscapes, which he executed when stationed with the Bombay Army.

The sitter of the present lot served in the 3rd Regiment of Foot from 1794-1812 and in the Peninsular War under the command of the Duke of Wellington. He is buried in St Mary's Church, Acton.
