Pierre Noel Violet (French, 1749-1819)
A portrait of the artist's wife, Marguerite Violet (née Becret) (1769-1841), wearing blue dress with full-length sleeves, matching blue and yellow striped shawl, secured at her waist with a ribbon bow, white lace fichu edged with embroidery, gold hooped earring, her hair lightly powdered, partially upswept and dressed with a white lace spotted bandeau.
Watercolour on paper, signed on the obverse P. Violet, gilt wood frame, inscribed to the reverse Madame Violet/ by her Husband Artist & Refugee/ from the French Revolution/ Août 1803/ bought from Monsieur Violet by/ C. J. Beverly.
