Watercolour on paper, signed on the obverse and dated Violet fte 1802, rectangular wood frame with gilt edges, inscribed to the reverse a daughter of/ Monsieur Violet (artist) & Refugee from the French/ Painted by her Father 1802. Bought from him by C.J.

Provenance: Purchased from the artist by Charles James Beverly FRS (1786-1868), the sitter portrayed in lot 98.

Footnotes

  • Pierre Noël Violet had two daughters by his wife, Marguerite Becret (1769-1841), the sitter portrayed in lot 51. Maria, Violet's eldest child, can be seen in lot 49.

    Violet's younger daughter, Cecilia, married the miniaturist, Louis Ami Ferriere (Swiss, 1792-1866), son of Francois Ferriere (Swiss, 1752-1839) on 9 January 1815. Louis Ami Ferriere executed a likeness (lot 98) of the first buyer of this portrait and of those depicting Cecilia's mother and sister.

    The couple had four children: Henry (1816-1879); Charles Louis (1818-1849); Emilius (d.1821); Cecilia (1822-1824) and Emily Georgina (1826-1896).
