W. Phelps (British, active circa 1784-circa 1791)
A pair of bust-length silhouettes of Reverend Robert Barker BD (1735-1797), Rector of Youlgreave, Derbyshire and his wife, Elizabeth Barker (née Carver) (1745-1796); the former, in profile to the left, wearing Geneva gown and single-breasted cassock, white stock and clerical necktie, powdered long bob wig; the latter, in profile to the right, wearing black redingote with cerulaen and white lapels, white frilled chemise and necktie, black hat, dressed with gathered ribbons, her powdered wig featuring two stiff curls beside her banging chignon.
Painted cut-out on card, wood frames with hammered brass mounts; signed on the reverse of the former and dated Robert Barker - Vicar of/ Youlgreave - at. 51 - done by/ W.
