Gold mounted on rectangular tortoiseshell snuff box, red leather travelling case, together with a note of provenance handwritten by a descendent of the sitter.

Provenance: Lady Jane Stopford, the sitter's daughter and thence by family descent.

Footnotes

  • Mary was the second daughter of Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch (1746-1812) and Lady Elizabeth Montagu (1743-1827). On 29 January 1791, Mary married James George Stopford, 3rd Earl of Courtown (1765-1835) at Grosvenor Square in London. The union saw the birth of seven children: Jane (1805-1873), from whom the consignors of the present lot are directly descended, Henry Scott (d.1881), George Henry James (c.1791-1792), Charles (1792-1794), James Thomas, 4th Earl of Courtown (1794-1858), Edward (1795-1840) and Montagu (1798-1864). The Countess of Courtown died at Courtown House, County Wexford, Ireland.
