Footnotes

  • This miniature depicts the three eldest children of the barrister, George Loyd Foster Harter, JP (1852-1920) of Salperton Park, Hazleton, and Frances Geraldine Coke (1869-1957). The couple married on 26 April 1887. Portrait miniatures of the sitters' parents were sold at these salerooms on 25 November 2009 (lot 234). The sitters' maternal uncle, Herbert De Odingsells Coke (1864-1890), is depicted in lot 134.

Helen Elizabeth Frederica married Lieutenant-Colonel William Tidswell Towers-Clark of the Coldstream Guards on 14 September 1915, although the union ended in divorce in 1929.

Geraldine Nevill married Francis Somerled Silvertop (1883-1917) of the Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars on 29 April 1916. On May 20 1917, Francis was killed in action at Guillemont Farm, Picardy alongside Valentine Fleming (1882-1917), MP and father of Ian Fleming, the creator of gentleman spy, James Bond. On 28 December 1920, the widowed Geraldine married Guy Shorrock.

2nd Lieutenant James Collier of the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry was killed in action during the First World War. The Salperton war memorial reveals that James 'died of wounds about November 28 1917, 13 miles from Jerusalem essaying to deliver the Holy Land [...] (for which an ancestor of his had also fought 1247-1260)'. James is buried in Ramleh War Cemetery.

George Foster Harter and Frances Coke had a fourth child, Francis John Coke Hatfield Harter (b.1905), who presumably had not been born at the time that Rinzi executed this portrait and who became Lord of the Manor of Salperton upon his father's demise as a result of the death of his elder brother in Palestine.

In 1892, Carl Bauerle exhibited two portraits of Helen and James at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, probably under the titles of Brother and Sister, in which the sitters are depicted aged 3 and 2 years old, respectively.
