Footnotes

  • Etienne was born in Sancerre on 3 June 1736, the eldest child of Etienne Renouard de Bussière and his second wife Marie Anne Billacoys de Vinon. The seat of the Renouard Bussière family was the 11th-century Château de Roche-sur-Loue in Arc-et-Senans, Alsace, the ownership of which allowed Etienne to style himself as the Marquis de Roche. On 19 April 1784, Etienne acquired the nearby Château Rouillaud, assuming the additional title of 'Baron Rouillaud' and subsequently strengthening the family's pre-eminence in the Alsace region. Etienne was an adviser to Louis XVI and a member of the 'Parlement de Besançon' that governed the region in accordance with the 'Ancien Régime' and fought against the King to uphold serfdom making the Franche-Comté one of the last areas of France to abolish the feudal practice.

Etienne married Marie Suzanne Doucet de Surigny, the daughter of Pierre Doucet and Suzanne Lançon and sister-in-law of the miniaturist responsible for the present lot and for lot 85. The union saw the birth of three sons, François Cyprien (1773-1838), Julien Raphaël (1774-1804) and Athanase Paul (1775-1846).
